Aircraft Passengers Reach 4 Million, Padang Airport Expanded

16 Feb 2019

Jakarta - Minangkabau International Airport in Padang, West Sumatra (West Sumatra), is experiencing conditions in which the number of airplane passengers far exceeds capacity.

In 2018, the number of passengers reached 4.13 million people even though the airport capacity was only 2.3 million passengers.

The rapid growth of passengers is inseparable from the movement of the tourism and economic sectors in West Sumatra.

Following this condition, PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) has plans to double the terminal.

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said the development of the terminal would make the Minangkabau International Airport accommodate up to 5.7 million passengers per year.

"The development of the Minangkabau International Airport terminal is to pursue a backlog so that services at the airport can be maintained. "The development of the terminal has doubled as well as the commitment of AP II in supporting the growth of tourism and the economy in West Sumatra, especially Padang," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

The development of this terminal is planned to be completed in 2019 so that the local community can have a wider and more magnificent airport, as well as an icon of the city of Padang to be proud of.

In addition to developing the aircraft passenger terminal, AP II also expanded the cargo warehousing area to 3,677 square meters and the aircraft apron to 80,520 square meters.

"The cargo business has become one of the focuses of AP II this year because of its rapid growth along with the advancement of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia. Therefore, almost every airport we expand the cargo area to take advantage of this momentum. "

Minangkabau International Airport is an airport under the 6th busiest AP II after Soekarno-Hatta (Tangerang), Kualanamu (Deli Serdang), Halim Perdanakusuma (Jakarta), Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II (Palembang), and Supadio (Pontianak).

Minangkabau International Airport is also one of the airports equipped with train transportation modes besides Soekarno-Hatta and Kualanamu. The official opening of the train at Minangkabau International Airport was carried out by President Joko Widodo on May 21, 2018.

The number of airlines that serve flights from the airport include Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Wings Air, Lion Air, NAM Air, Citilink, and Xpress Air.

Meanwhile, international routes are served by AirAsia (Kuching and Kuala Lumpur) and Wings Air (Kuching).
